Great Falls Pickleball LLC Eyes Development: A new indoor pickleball facility featuring eight pickleball courts is on the horizon for Somersworth. The city’s Planning Board received a conceptual plan for the development at 136 Route 108 with enthusiasm during their meeting Wednesday night.
Community Engagement
Representing Great Falls Pickleball LLC, Dover lawyer Francis X. Bruton sought feedback from the board and neighboring residents as they work towards a more formal proposal. Situated on a 2.5-acre plot in a commercial/industrial zone, the property borders several residential areas. “Pickleball is very popular,” Bruton noted. “We have followed the news and know noise with outside courts has been an issue. We will be sensitive to those concerns. We believe an indoor facility can work well, will fit in nicely.”
Public Input
During the public hearing, only one couple voiced their opinion. Patricia and John Eaton, residents behind the proposed facility, expressed their enthusiasm. “We love pickleball, are fans,” Patricia said. “We give the idea a thumbs up,” added John.
On the other hand, Michelle Mears, the city’s planning and community development director, shared a letter from an opposing resident. The letter raised concerns about noise and suggested that the facility could devalue nearby homes.
Facility Details
The proposed facility will feature eight indoor courts, changing areas, and vending machines, according to Bruton. Plans include parking in front of the building, alongside a fenced and landscaped perimeter. Bruton emphasized the importance of considering abutter needs when planning landscaping, lighting, and operating hours, which remain undecided. “This will be a metal building, but we want to make it look attractive,” he said, highlighting its proximity to well-known local facilities like the sports dome and The Works athletic center.
Next Steps
The Planning Board members provided suggestions regarding lighting and buffers, generally expressing support for the concept. Bruton is set to return with a site plan in the near future, marking the next step in the development process.
