Pickleball Arrives at University of Findlay: New Pickleball Courts Under Construction

Pickleball Arrives at University of Findlay: Excitement is building at the University of Findlay (UF) as construction of new pickleball courts kicks off this week. Many students have expressed their anticipation for dedicated pickleball facilities, and their hopes are becoming a reality. Bryan Golding, the director of recreational services at UF, confirmed the construction plans, revealing that four new pickleball courts will be built west of the Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion, adjacent to the basketball courts across from the CBSL.

Ready for Play This Fall

Students at UF can expect the new courts to be operational as early as this fall.

“I think they’re going to start construction, moving ground mid-September. We’re hoping everything’s completed by mid-October.” – (Golding)

This timeline brings optimism for students eager to engage in this rapidly growing sport.

A Game for Everyone

Kaylie McCann, a junior and resident director, is among those excited about the new courts. A self-proclaimed beginner, McCann appreciates pickleball for its fun and stress-relieving qualities.

“I know for me, pickleball just makes me happy when I play, and it’s a good stress reliever. It’s just something fun to do with your friends.” – (McCann)

The social aspect of pickleball is a significant draw for many students. Jacob Mitchell, a junior majoring in ESOH, is an experienced player who enjoys helping others improve.

“I especially like just getting to play with other people that want to get better and everything because it makes you a better person.” – (Mitchell)

Friendly Competition Ahead

Golding also mentioned that intramural pickleball will be introduced alongside the new courts, generating even more excitement. McCann believes this initiative will be a tremendous success on campus. “People would for sure sign up for that,” she said, highlighting the demand for such opportunities.

Currently, many UF students venture to Rawson Park, about 1.2 miles from campus, to enjoy pickleball on existing courts.

“If everyone has the gear and everything, they’re probably out there playing a couple of times a week.” – (Mitchell)

Community Support and Future Prospects

Funding for the construction comes entirely from donors, alleviating any financial burden on the university.

“We had donors come to us and wanted to do pickleball courts, so we’re going to do pickleball courts.” – (Golding)

Moreover, the new facilities could serve as a draw for prospective students. McCann pointed out the unique appeal of pickleball courts at schools like UF.

“I know a lot of my friends play pickleball back home, and they are still in high school, and if they saw pickleball courts, they would be encouraged to come here. They know they can do something that they really enjoy.” – (McCann)
