“Two days ago when we first opened these, the courts were full and people were waiting in line,” said Jane Fredman, an Awake Palmer Lake volunteer who played a pivotal role in the project. The anticipation and enthusiasm in her voice reflect the community’s excitement for this new gathering place.

Awake Palmer Lake, a community-led non-profit organization, spearheaded the initiative to establish the courts. “I think it’s awesome, they’re amazing, and I just found out that they’re gonna be open all winter long, just locked down when it’s icy. So, I guess I’ll wear my ski clothes out here, I don’t know,” laughed Pam Camilliere, a proud Palmer Lake local. Her enthusiasm is contagious, highlighting the joy that the courts bring to the community.
Looking Ahead
But Awake Palmer Lake isn’t stopping with just the pickleball courts. The non-profit has ambitious plans to host a .5K race scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 29, aimed at raising funds for further projects that will enhance recreational opportunities in the area.
“We want to perhaps improve the baseball diamond area and just keep improving it because there is a little bit of a lack of public recreational amenities in the Northern El Paso County area.” – (Fredman)

The .5K race is exactly what it sounds like—a short and sweet course spanning several hundred yards. “People dress up in costumes, and at the halfway point, they get a free doughnut,” Fredman added, her eyes sparkling with excitement at the thought of community members coming together for a day of fun.
“It’s a lot of fun. It’s way too far a distance though,” teased Gene Huismann, a local who has participated in the .5K before. “The doughnut in the middle saved me though.” This lighthearted exchange shows the spirit of the community, where laughter and shared experiences create lasting bonds.
