This decision sparked disappointment among local pickleball players, who felt sidelined as the resurfacing would eliminate the lines necessary for pickleball play. Under the terms of a grant from the United States Tennis Association, the resurfaced courts are restricted to only tennis lines for the first five years, leaving the pickleball community frustrated.
Trieu addressed these concerns at the Board of Education meeting, noting the upset within Cambridge’s pickleball community. “So that kind of put the county in a pickle, no pun intended,” Trieu remarked, representing the dilemma faced by local sports enthusiasts.
A Path Forward
In light of the resurfacing decision, Trieu proposed that the Board of Education consider transferring the Glasgow Tennis Courts and the adjacent parcel behind the Judy Center to the county. He emphasized that this transfer would enable the county to develop dedicated pickleball courts and facilitate youth and adult tennis and pickleball programming across the facilities.
Additionally, Trieu provided an update on the Glasgow Tennis Courts resurfacing project, stating it is ongoing and anticipated to conclude within the week. “So you’re going to start seeing a lot of tennis players out there on the newly resurfaced courts,” he assured attendees, highlighting the upcoming opportunities for tennis enthusiasts.
