Pickleball Courts Thriving in Chino Hills: Until the Rain Hits!

Pickleball Courts Thriving in Chino Hills: Pickleball has taken the world by storm, and nowhere is that more evident than at Vellano Park in Chino Hills, where the local tennis courts were transformed into dedicated pickleball courts in late 2021. The conversion has given rise to a vibrant community of pickleball players, from beginners to seasoned enthusiasts. But as much as the courts have brought joy, they’ve also faced some unexpected hurdles. With the rainy season hitting hard, players are now seeing the effects of moisture on the court’s surface, causing bubbling and the need for ongoing repairs. As the park prepares for a full resurfacing, it’s time to take a closer look at what’s happening and what this means for the future of pickleball in the area.

The Challenges of Pickleball Courts

The conversion of tennis courts to pickleball courts at Vellano Park in Chino Hills has been a thrilling development for local players. However, not everything has gone smoothly. Since the transformation in November 2021, players like Mavi Keane have noticed significant issues arising, particularly after heavy rainfall.

As the rainy season comes, many players have pointed out the unsightly bubbles and patches that have formed on the court’s surface. It’s a stark reminder that even the most exciting additions to our community come with challenges. “Look at all the repairs we’ve had to make,” Keane shared during a recent game, gesturing to the uneven patches on the courts. It’s a situation that can dampen the spirits of even the most enthusiastic players.

Community services director Jonathan Marshall acknowledged the situation, explaining that the bubbling is due to moisture trapped within the concrete slab.

“Moisture in the slab of the concrete is not something we can prevent, and in the instance of lots and lots of water, it’s just part of maintenance.” – (Mr. Marshall)

This isn’t just an isolated issue; it’s a common occurrence in areas that receive heavy rainfall. The city is actively monitoring the courts, but the high level of usage is another factor that adds to the wear and tear.

Why Resurfacing is Necessary: A Closer Look

So, why is the resurfacing of pickleball courts so crucial? First off, the surface plays a significant role in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for players of all ages and skill levels. For instance, bubbling can lead to uneven playing surfaces, increasing the risk of injuries during play. No one wants to take a tumble due to a bubble in the court!

Additionally, resurfacing can enhance the overall quality of play. A well-maintained court offers better traction, allowing players to move confidently and make those tricky shots that define the game. Imagine trying to execute a perfect pickleball shot only to find the footing compromised by a bubbling surface. It can be frustrating and discouraging!

Marshall noted that the upcoming resurfacing will be handled by Trueline Construction and Surfacing, the same contractor responsible for the original installation.

“The resurfacing will cost approximately $14,000 to $15,000, but it’s an investment in our community.” – (Mr. Marshall)

Given the amount of use these courts get, regular maintenance will likely be needed to keep them in top condition.

With the resurfacing planned for November, players can look forward to an improved experience on the courts. It’s not just about fixing problems; it’s about fostering a vibrant community where pickleball thrives.
