New Pickleball Courts at Miller Park Arriving With Game Changing Future

New Pickleball Courts at Miller Park : Construction crews are making significant strides toward completing new outdoor pickleball courts at Miller Park, a development that promises to elevate the local pickleball scene and provide much-needed facilities for enthusiasts.

Hopeful Timeline for Play

We are still hopeful that the courts will be ready for play by the end of October,” said Matt Bourne, parks and natural resources manager for the City of Eden Prairie. “It all depends on the weather we get, but that is still the plan at this point.” With continued mild weather and favorable conditions, the new pickleball courts may open for play before winter sets in, creating excitement among local enthusiasts who have been eagerly awaiting these facilities.

Enhanced Facilities for Pickleball Players

The new facility is specifically designed to cater to the growing interest in pickleball, featuring eight dedicated pickleball courts that will allow for both recreational play and competitive events. In addition to the pickleball courts, the complex will include one tennis court and one basketball court, providing a multi-sport environment that caters to various athletic interests.

The courts are lighted for evening play, allowing players to enjoy the sport even after sunset, which is especially important as daylight hours decrease in the fall. The project aims to replace the aging facilities at Miller Park and adds a shaded seating area, enhancing the overall experience for players and spectators alike. The city council approved a construction contract worth $1,449,590 in July to make this exciting project a reality, underscoring the city’s commitment to fostering recreational opportunities.

Shift from Indoor to Outdoor Focus

Initially, there were discussions among city officials about constructing an indoor pickleball facility to accommodate the growing demand for year-round play. However, after thorough deliberation and consideration of the financial implications, the city council ultimately opted against this idea due to cost estimates that reached as high as $14 million for the enclosed structure. By focusing on outdoor courts, Eden Prairie emphasizes accessibility and community engagement in pickleball, which has rapidly gained popularity in recent years.

However, this decision means that local pickleball fans seeking winter play will need to rely on privately owned fitness facilities, highlighting a gap for year-round engagement in the sport. As the outdoor courts near completion, the community eagerly anticipates the opportunities for growth and participation that they will bring.
