Pella’s Pickleball Future: In a bustling meeting on Tuesday, the Pella City Council approved several key action items, marking a significant moment for the community. Mayor Don DeWaard opened the session with commendation for the Pella Police Department, which recently achieved national accreditation, a noteworthy milestone that underscores their commitment to excellence.

New Pickleball Courts in Partnership with Central College

The council greenlit an exciting partnership with Central College to expand recreational opportunities in the area. The City of Pella will contribute $300,000 toward the renovation of tennis courts, which will see the addition of new pickleball courts. This initiative not only promotes physical activity but also strengthens ties between the city and the college community.

Kiwanis Park Improvements Underway

A public hearing revealed plans for phase three improvements at Kiwanis Park, set to kick off later this month. Caliber Concrete has been awarded the contract for $221,326 to ensure the park meets the community’s needs. With city funds covering $150,000 and the remaining costs supported by the Wonder Spelen non-profit, residents can look forward to enhanced recreational facilities by next summer.

Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Updates

In addition to the park developments, the council approved a pair of agreements with Confluence for updating the city’s comprehensive plan for the first time since 2014. This includes revisions to zoning and subdivision codes for $175,500 and the creation of a master signage plan for the community at a cost of $48,000. A public hearing has been scheduled for November 5th to discuss a development agreement for the Prairie Ridge Preliminary Plat, which pertains to the next phase of the housing area.

Ordinances Adopted for Community Development

The council also adopted a series of ordinances that will impact community finances and infrastructure. This includes tax increment financing for the Epcon Residential Urban Renewal Area and an increase in parking rates in the Molengracht. These measures reflect the council’s proactive approach to managing growth and ensuring the city’s long-term sustainability.
