Pickleball Fever Hits Staten Island with New Pickleball Courts Planned

Pickleball Fever Hits Staten Island: The rising popularity of pickleball across the United States is evident, and Staten Island is ready to join the movement. Last Friday, local officials gathered to announce plans for new public courts in the borough, aiming to enhance access for residents eager to join the pickleball craze.

Official Announcement at Wolfe’s Pond Park

Councilman Joseph Borelli (R-South Shore), Borough President Vito Fossella (R-Staten Island), and NYC Parks Commissioner Lynda Ricciardone made their announcement at Wolfe’s Pond Park in Prince’s Bay, revealing that the location will soon house three new courts. The project, set to break ground in late 2026, is anticipated to be completed by late 2027 and will feature lights for evening play.

Responding to Growing Demand

Acknowledging the increasing demand for pickleball courts in his district, Councilman Borelli highlighted his efforts to secure $2.88 million in capital funding for the initiative. This funding, made possible through collaboration with NYC Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, is aimed at providing more spaces for the sport.

“When it comes to space for pickleball, we have had a real dill-emma. I am happy to have obtained funding for these three new courts that will help to relieve the pressure by providing scenic court space and new lighting that will be installed here to create more opportunities to play throughout the day.” – (Borelli)

Future Plans for Additional Facilities

Borough President Fossella expressed optimism about the future of pickleball on Staten Island.

“As pickleball continues to grow in popularity, we will continue to identify locations for new courts. We thank Council Member Borelli for his efforts and desire to provide pickleball players more opportunities. These new courts and lighting will be good for players to enjoy the natural beauty of Wolfe’s Pond Park, overlooking the Raritan Bay—day or night.” – (Fossella)

Enhancing Community Recreation

Parks Commissioner Ricciardone showed the growing interest in pickleball and emphasized the importance of enhancing local recreational facilities.

“The pickleball craze has swept through Staten Island, and we’re thrilled to meet the moment by adding new courts at Wolfe’s Pond Park. These new courts with lighting will allow Staten Islanders of all ages to enjoy this fun and fast-paced pickleball sport well into the evening hours. We thank Council Member Borelli and Speaker Adams for funding this project and for their continued support of our parks.” – (Ricciardone)
