1st Montague Pickleball Tournament Draws Massive Crowds and Champions

On Sunday, Montague Street was transformed into Pickleball Avenue for the inaugural Montague Pickleball Tournament. Sponsored by the Brooklyn Heights Association, the Montague Street BID, and NYC DOT as part of the Open Streets initiative, the event drew significant community engagement and excitement.

Inaugural Champions Crowned

After a competitive round-robin format featuring 16 teams, the doubles team of Nicholas Aronica and Connor McAlary emerged as the tournament champions. Their victory not only showed their skills but also secured them a bounty of prizes and gift certificates from local merchants. Notable sponsors included WundaBar, Barry’s, Chama Mama, GTHR Yoga, Books Are Magic, James Weir, L’Appartement 4F, and European Wax.

Community Engagement

Two dedicated pickleball tournament courts were established, along with additional open-play courts for community members. One court was designated for adults, while the other welcomed children, promoting inclusivity and casual play for all skill levels.

BHA Deputy Director Kim Glickman highlighted the pickleball tournament’s significance, noting,

“This is our second year hosting pickleball at Montague Open Streets. The idea came last year from a volunteer who lives on Montague Street, so this year he suggested having a tournament — and it was fabulous!” – (Kim Glickman)

A Wimbledon Atmosphere

Glickman described the vibrant atmosphere of the event, stating, “It was like people were watching Wimbledon!” Her remarks reflect the energy and enthusiasm surrounding the tournament, showing the community’s passion for pickleball and the success of the event overall.
