Wright State’s New Pickleball Courts Are Already a Student Favorite For Trying Something New?

Tucked beneath the iconic Wright State University water tower are Wright State’s New Pickleball Courts, as a vibrant addition to the campus landscape. Located at the north end of Parking Lot 4, these courts were officially opened in September, reflecting the university’s ongoing commitment to its Students First initiative aimed at enhancing student retention.

A Smart Investment

The $28,000 construction project has quickly garnered attention from students and faculty alike. Recently, the courts hosted a Pink-Out Pickleball tournament, with proceeds supporting the American Cancer Society—a statement to the community spirit that Wright State fosters.

“The courts were constructed over the summer, and it’s all about enhancing the student experience,” said Javan Conley, the associate vice president of facility operations. Conley emphasized that the initiative not only provides recreational opportunities but also aligns with the university’s mission to prioritize student engagement.

Making the Most of Space

In a strategic move to cut costs, Wright State utilized an underperforming area in Lot 4 for the construction of the courts. This innovative approach eliminated the need for extensive excavation and concrete work, effectively halving construction expenses.

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the United States and internationally,” Conley noted. “The new courts offer a fresh experience for both students and staff.

Embracing New Experiences

For students, the introduction of these courts represents a chance to explore a dynamic and engaging sport. MBA student Evelyn Oktavec expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity: “It’s just kind of fun to try something new.” Her sentiment captures the spirit of adventure that these new facilities aim to inspire among the Wright State community.

A Commitment to Community

Conley reaffirmed the university’s dedication to listening to its students. “We will continue to put thought and intentionality into what we do and how we spend our money,” he stated, highlighting a commitment to future enhancements that cater to student interests.
