Dolgeville to Unveil New Basketball and Pickleball Court at Center Park

Dolgeville to Unveil New Basketball and Pickleball Court: Dolgeville is preparing to unveil a new basketball and pickleball court adjacent to the recently refurbished playground at Center Park. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for July 2, 2024, at 1 pm. The initiative began in 2016/2017 when the Village collaborated with Cornell Cooperative Extension to pursue a HEART grant aimed at promoting community activity, particularly among older residents for heart health, according to Christine Reynolds, Chairperson of Dolgeville Forward.

Mayor Mary Puznowski expressed enthusiasm about the community’s involvement in the project, stating,

“We saw an opportunity to participate in the program, and there was significant interest.”

Originally conceived as an exercise station project, community leaders redirected efforts towards revitalizing the playground due to its deteriorated state. This expanded into the Dolgeville Fun and Fitness project, which raised over $150,000 through grants, donations, and community builds, overseen by the DPW.

“The deteriorating basketball court, with its aged asphalt and outdated equipment, needed attention due to constant demand from local children.” – (Reynolds)

Funding for the new basketball and pickleball court came from The Wadas Foundation and ARPA funds allocated by County Legislator Rodney Schwartz, earmarked for youth activities and community enhancement.

Regarding the broader Center Park Project, Mayor Puznowski outlined completed steps, including pavilion demolition, land clearing, and infrastructure improvements. Initial bids exceeded available funds, prompting a phased approach starting with the basketball court.

“The next phases include installing a splash pad and pavilion to fulfill grant requirements.” Puznowski explained. The splash pad, funded in part by the New York Forward grant, features modular water play elements suitable for children.

Christine Reynolds highlighted the project’s inclusivity and amenities, including accessible pathways, picnic areas, kitchen facilities, bathrooms, and a three-season room for summer park programs.

“We anticipate the park becoming a hub for youth activities, tournaments, and community events.” Puznowski added, praising the contractor’s workmanship on the project.
