Scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the pickleball fundraiser will take place at Chief Umtuch Middle School, located at 700 NW Ninth St., Battle Ground.
While those wishing to participate in the pickleball matches are required to pay a registration fee of $20, the event is free for anyone who wants to attend. Players of all skill levels are encouraged to join in on the fun.
The Mission of Prevent Together
Founded 12 years ago, Prevent Together is a non-profit organization comprised of parents, educators, law enforcement personnel, health professionals, and other dedicated community members.
The alliance is steadfast in its mission to promote youth wellness and prevent substance abuse through a variety of educational programs and community events. One notable initiative is the annual National Night Out held at Kiwanis Park, which serves to raise awareness about safety and prevention strategies among local families.
Executive Director Jennifer Kirby emphasizes the organization’s commitment to providing young people with the necessary resources to lead healthy lives. She highlighted a critical aspect of the initiative: educating parents.

The Need for Ongoing Support
In 2014, Prevent Together was honored with the prestigious Drug-Free Communities Grant from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). However, with this grant set to expire next year, the first pickleball fundraiser will play a pivotal role in sustaining vital programs.
Proceeds from the event—stemming from pickleball registration fees and a silent auction—will directly support initiatives like the DREAM Team (Dedicated, Remarkable, Enlightened, Adolescent, Making a Difference). This middle-school student group is focused on drug prevention and has actively participated in local and national training sessions.
Their advocacy has led them to meet with elected officials to discuss strategies aimed at reducing substance use among youth. Notably, in January, students had the opportunity to visit Washington U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell in Washington, D.C., to discuss ongoing drug prevention efforts.
The funds raised will support the DREAM Team and other similar programs currently operational at Chief Umtuch, Pleasant Valley, and Tukes Valley middle schools. Ultimately, the alliance aspires to extend its reach to all six middle schools in the Battle Ground area, ensuring that every young person has access to the support they need to thrive.
