Indoor Pickleball Facility in Batavia: The Batavia City Council is set to review plans to transform a vacant shopping center on Randall Road into an indoor pickleball facility. The proposal, spearheaded by applicant Stephen Stoner on behalf of Pickled Inc., based in Wheaton, aims to convert an empty unit of the Wind Point Shopping Center on the city’s west side into a vibrant hub for pickleball enthusiasts.
A New Home for Pickleball
If the Batavia City Council gives the green light, the former buybuy BABY storefront at 301 N. Randall Road—nestled between Kohl’s and Office Max—will become the fourth location for Pickled!, joining existing facilities in Wheaton, Woodridge, and Channahon. This ambitious plan involves the renovation of a substantial 34,500-square-foot space, featuring the construction of 12 pickleball courts, four golf simulators, and six table tennis tables. Additionally, a members’ lounge and retail shop are set to enhance the facility’s appeal.
Membership and Pricing Structure
The proposed facility aims to be accessible to the public, offering players the option to enroll in a membership system that provides exclusive access and preferential rates. Membership fees will vary from $30 to $80 per month, with different tiers granting specific privileges to cater to the diverse needs of the community.
To reserve courts, players can either call ahead or utilize the Pickled! app, which will also facilitate open play times—eliminating the need for reservations during those periods. The pricing structure for court usage is designed to be competitive, charging $12 per hour for members and $24 per hour for non-members. Open play sessions will be available at $5 for members and $10 for non-members, although rates may rise during peak hours.
Additional Offerings and Timeline
Beyond regular play, Pickled! plans to offer both group and private lessons, with tournaments and special events also in the works. The venue is designed to accommodate private events, broadening its appeal within the community. Proposed operating hours are from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, ensuring ample opportunity for players to engage in the sport.
The initial proposal was reviewed by Batavia’s Plan Commission during its meeting on October 16, where it received a recommendation for approval. Should the city council’s committee-of-the-whole meeting yield a favorable recommendation on Tuesday, the proposal will proceed to the council for possible final approval during its meeting on November 4.
