Queen of the Court Pickleball Fundraiser: The third annual Queen of the Court Callahan Cancer Center pickleball fundraiser took place on October 12, bringing together a competitive lineup of 44 women at the North Platte Recreation Center. This event showed four divisions of fierce competition, and it’s not just about pickleball; it’s about rallying the community around a great cause.
A Growing Tradition
With the pickleball tournament’s popularity rising, participation numbers jumped from 32 last year to an impressive 44 this time around. Organizer Barb Baldridge shared the exciting news that donations soared by over $1,000 compared to 2023.
The North Platte Pickleball Club emerged victorious off the court, presenting a check for $3,600 to the dedicated nurses and staff of the Callahan Cancer Center. This generous donation will help cover travel expenses and various needs for patients and their families.
Inspiring a Legacy
At the heart of this fundraiser is the spirit of Rich Deckert, a beloved longtime women’s events volunteer and club member known affectionately as Iron Man. Rich Deckert, who bravely fought a seven-year battle with pancreatic cancer this past spring, has left a profound legacy. His zest for life shone through as he competed not just in pickleball, but also in softball, bowling tournaments, and numerous races in the Platte River Fitness Series.
Louise Hoffman’s luck shined bright when she won a raffle basket donated by The Gift Box. Meanwhile, proceeds from the sale of commemorative T-shirts will contribute to erecting a memorial bench in honor of Rich Deckert at the Cody Park pickleball courts next spring.
A Community United
“One man’s inspiration has had a snowball effect, with pickleball in our community and has led to a partnership with Callahan Care Center nurses and staff.” Barb Baldridge stated, emphasizing how Rich Deckert’s legacy continues to motivate and unite the community. This tournament is more than just a series of matches; it’s a tribute to resilience, community spirit, and the lasting impact of one extraordinary individual.
