Carthage Serves Up New Pickleball Courts: Carthage residents and pickleball players can rejoice as two new pickleball courts are set to enhance the community’s recreational offerings. The renovation of the tennis courts at Nancy Kiser Park is slated to commence in April 2025, transforming them into hybrid courts designed for pickleball and tennis.
Funding the Future of Recreation
The renovation project carries a price tag of just over $60,000, with most of the funding sourced from recreation payment in lieu fees associated with the Carriage Place Townhomes development.
This strategic collaboration between the Carthage Board of Commissioners and the site developer, David Chapman, shows a commitment to increase recreational facilities in the area.
A negotiated fee of $500 per dwelling unit will be utilized to fund enhancements that benefit existing residents and newcomers moving into these recently constructed communities.
As the sport of pickleball continues to gain traction, local facilities, particularly those managed by Moore County, have found their pickleball courts often full. Recognizing this demand, Moore County Parks and Recreation stepped up, agreeing to cover nearly $2,000 of the costs associated with painting the new lines on the courts.
This collaboration ensures that the new pickleball courts will be ready to accommodate the growing interest in the sport without burdening the town’s budget.
Enhancing the Pickleball Experience
“I would like to look at some accessories.” said Town Manager Emily Yopp, highlighting the importance of comfort for users of the new pickleball courts.
“Such as benches and shade covers, to provide a bit more comfort to members of the public enjoying the new court once completed.” – (Emily Yopp)
This thoughtful consideration reflects a broader vision of not just building pickleball facilities but also creating a welcoming environment for the community.
As plans are made, an updated cost to the town will be presented at a future meeting, dependent upon decisions regarding the addition of auxiliary park accessories. With these developments, Carthage is assured to become a more vibrant hub for pickleball, offering residents an inviting space to engage in this increasingly popular sport.
