Henrico County Doubles Pickleball Courts in Strategic Move

Henrico County Doubles Pickleball Courts: Pouncey Tract Park in western Henrico County is set to become a hub for pickleball players, thanks to a significant $4.4 million expansion that doubles its capacity for players. The illuminated complex, featuring 12 new courts—including two championship-caliber courts—will officially open alongside the park’s existing 12 courts at 10 a.m. on November 2.

Aiming for National Recognition

“It will give us the ability to potentially host regional and national tournaments.” said John Zannino, the Henrico County Director of Parks and Recreation. With this expansion, Pouncey Tract Park is assured of attracting tournament organizers seeking a premier location for their events, a critical development for a sport that has surged in popularity.

According to the 2024 USA Pickleball growth report, pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the United States, having experienced an astonishing growth rate of over 200% since 2020. This rapid expansion reflects the sport’s universal appeal, transcending age and demographic boundaries.

Meeting Community Demand

“The existing 12 courts on this complex are constantly busy and full, showing that there is a demand in the community and which really started the process for how could we expand. This is really a sport for everyone. I mean, it started out with a lot of seniors playing, but now it’s all ages, all ethnicities.” – (John Zannino)

This expansion speaks volumes about the increasing interest in pickleball. What began as a pastime primarily enjoyed by seniors has evolved into a sport embraced by all ages and ethnicities.

Enhancing the Park Experience

The expansion not only increases Henrico’s total number of pickleball courts to 38 but also enhances the overall park experience.

The project includes shaded seating areas for spectators, 86 additional parking spots, and ADA-accessible sidewalks, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the sport in a welcoming environment.
