Fairhope City’s 800000 Dollar Investment: The city of Fairhope is making significant strides to expand its recreational offerings with a new pickleball complex set to be built adjacent to the existing tennis courts at Mike Ford Tennis Center. Once complete, the city will boast a total of 18 outdoor courts, with a nearly $1 million investment marking the city’s commitment to enhancing its parks and recreation facilities.
Ongoing Construction and Expansion Plans
Construction crews have already begun site preparation for the new 12-court facility, located on the grounds that previously housed an outdoor fitness course. Although heavy rain delayed work on November 6, 2024, the demand for courts remains high. Local pickleball enthusiasts, like Cary Bathrick, continue to play at alternative venues like the Fairhope Rec Center. “You have to plan ahead,” Bathrick remarked, describing how busy the local courts can get during peak times.
The growth of pickleball, the fastest-growing sport in America, has led to increased interest, and these new courts are expected to alleviate some of the congestion at the city’s current facilities. The Quail Creek courts, which feature six outdoor pickleball courts, have also experienced high demand. “I think it will disburse the crowd. I think it will bring more visitors in,” Frances McGowin, a local player, said. She believes the new courts will help foster more opportunities for tournaments and other pickleball-related events.
A Strategic Investment for the Community
The new expansion, which includes lighting for the courts, represents an $800,000 investment by the city of Fairhope. This is part of a broader effort to enhance the quality of life for the community, with Mayor Sherry Sullivan emphasizing that the city’s recreational offerings contribute not only to quality of life but also to economic and workforce development. “Those people that want to come work in your community…they’re looking for those communities that offer recreational opportunities,” Mayor Sullivan explained.
In addition to the new pickleball courts, three new tennis courts will be added at Mike Ford Tennis Center, with one replacing the existing four pickleball courts. Over the past decade, the city has invested $10 million in expanding recreation options for residents.
Completion Set for Summer 2025
The expansion project is slated to be completed by the summer of 2025, offering both pickleball and tennis enthusiasts an exciting new space to enjoy their sports. This marks an exciting chapter for Fairhope’s recreational landscape, positioning it as a growing hub for outdoor sports and community engagement.
