New Pickleball Destination in Silver Spring Set For Grand Opening on Nov. 13

New Pickleball Destination in Silver Spring: Montgomery Parks is enhancing its pickleball facilities with the addition of six dedicated pickleball courts at East Norbeck Local Park, offering both residents and visitors more opportunities to engage in the fast-growing sport. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony is set to take place on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This special event will not only showcase the new courts but also celebrate the addition of night-time play under the newly installed lights.

A Perfect Spot for Pickleball Enthusiasts

According to Chuck Kines, the park planner for Montgomery Parks, the choice of East Norbeck Local Park as the site for the new pickleball courts couldn’t have been better. “East Norbeck Local Park is the perfect location for our newest pickleball destination hub,” Kines remarked. “There is ample parking, and the courts already have excellent lighting. The demand for pickleball continues to grow, and the project at East Norbeck is one of several we have recently completed or have in the works.”

With the addition of these six courts, Montgomery Parks now boasts a total of 18 dedicated pickleball courts across the region, in addition to over 50 shared tennis/pickleball courts. For tennis enthusiasts, the park is also conveniently located just a short drive from Olney Manor Recreational Park, which features 19 tennis courts.

More Improvements on the Horizon

This addition is part of Montgomery Parks’ ongoing efforts to meet the growing demand for pickleball facilities. Other recent and upcoming improvements include upgrades to lighting at several parks, as well as the construction of new courts.

  • Sundown Local Park, Ednor Local Park, Meadowood Local Park: Upgraded lighting
  • Columbia Local Park: Four new dedicated pickleball courts and one new tennis court with pickleball striping
  • Owens Local Park: Pickleball striping added to two tennis courts
  • Meadowbrook Local Park: Renovation of all four tennis courts, two with pickleball striping, and upgraded lighting, expected to be completed by spring 2025
  • Rubini Athletic Complex, Wheaton Regional Park: Conversion of two tennis courts into six dedicated pickleball courts, along with upgraded lighting and parking lot renovations, expected to be completed by spring 2026
  • Greenwood Local Park: Three new dedicated pickleball courts planned for park renovation, expected completion in fall 2025

Event Details: Ribbon-Cutting and Night Play

The public is invited to join the ribbon-cutting celebration at East Norbeck Local Park, where participants can enjoy the new courts and celebrate the growing presence of pickleball in Montgomery Parks. After the ribbon-cutting, attendees can stay for some evening play, taking full advantage of the newly installed lights.
