Pickleball Returns to Glasgow Street: On November 4, the Dorchester County Council approved plans to acquire property behind the Judy Center on Glasgow Street to construct six new pickleball courts. The decision follows the resurfacing of Glasgow Tennis Courts, which had left pickleball players without a space to play.
This initiative came after the Dorchester County Board of Education’s August approval of a resurfacing project led by the James G. Busick Tennis Foundation. Funded by a grant from the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the project mandates that only tennis lines can be marked on the courts for the first five years. This restriction, while beneficial for tennis, effectively sidelined local pickleball players, who voiced frustration over the exclusion.
Community Frustration Turns to Action
The USTA’s stipulation had been a sticking point for pickleball players, who saw the tennis-focused decision as a setback for their sport. Recognizing the community’s disappointment, the Dorchester County Recreation and Parks Director, Duc Trieu, stepped in to propose a solution.
In a September Board of Education meeting, Trieu formally requested a land transfer on behalf of the County Council, aiming to develop dedicated pickleball courts near the existing tennis facilities. The newly acquired space would not only bring six pickleball courts to the area but also allow for expanded youth and adult programming, creating a space where sports could thrive.
Council’s Commitment to Community Recreation
Council President Lenny Pfeffer, at the November 4 meeting, praised Trieu’s work and encouraged community members to spread the word.
“It’s been very important to this community,” Pfeffer said, emphasizing the value of the new courts. “So I’m glad we can go forward with this.”
For Dorchester County’s active pickleball community, this decision signifies progress and a fresh opportunity to grow the sport locally.
