Pickleball Courts Coming to Broadview Heights: The City of Broadview Heights has announced plans to revamp its recreational offerings with new tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts on the City Hall/Leo H. Bender Community Center campus. Situated on Broadview Road, this new complex will feature two tennis courts, six pickleball courts, and one basketball court, strategically placed between the community center and the Broadview Heights police station.
New Location for Improved Accessibility
These additions replace tennis and basketball courts at The Fields, a city sports field complex located north of Ohio 82 on Broadview Road. According to Amanda Hutcheson, Director of Parks and Recreation, the current courts are “in poor condition and unrepairable at this point.” Despite prior resurfacing efforts, severe cracking and structural issues have rendered the courts unplayable.
“Our current courts are in poor condition and unrepairable at this point. We have (re)surfaced them in the past, but the amount of cracks, and how large and deep they are getting, is beyond repair.” – (Amanda Hutcheson)
Enhanced Safety and Usability
The new basketball court location addresses long-standing safety concerns. At The Fields, the court is uncomfortably close to an area frequented by families with young children and adjacent to a baseball field, where stray fly balls often disrupt play.
“This (new basketball court) will allow us to give the users a space that is dedicated to them and not be sandwiched between a playground and baseball fields. It’s also nice to pull all of these courts together into a complex and outdoor sports destination, one that will serve so many of our residents and others.” – (Amanda Hutcheson)
Dedicated Space for Pickleball Enthusiasts
The city has recognized the growing demand for pickleball with plans to create dedicated pickleball courts. Currently, tennis courts are being used for tennis and pickleball, and the community center’s gymnasium floors are also lined for pickleball.
“We’re building these courts due to increased interest in the sport and to give pickleball players their own dedicated space.” – (Amanda Hutcheson)
Investment and Design Details
To execute the project, the city hired Hejduk-Cox & Associates Inc., an engineering firm based in Solon. The firm will oversee the design of the tennis courts at a cost of $16,989 and the basketball and pickleball courts for $33,982.
News in Brief: Pickleball Courts Coming to Broadview Heights
Broadview Heights will add two tennis courts, six pickleball courts, and one basketball court to the City Hall/Leo H. Bender Community Center campus on Broadview Road, replacing older facilities at The Fields complex. Amanda Hutcheson, Director of Parks and Recreation, noted the need for new courts due to deteriorating conditions and safety concerns.
The new pickleball complex, designed by Hejduk-Cox & Associates Inc., aims to provide a central outdoor sports hub, complete with dedicated pickleball courts. The relocation addresses previous issues, including close proximity to playgrounds and baseball fields, and reflects the city’s commitment to enhancing recreational spaces.
