New Pickleball Facility in St Augustine Promises Year-Round Sports for the Community

New Pickleball Facility in St Augustine: St. Johns County is currently reviewing plans for a new sports facility in St. Augustine, which promises to serve the community with a primary focus on pickleball. This proposed 12,000-square-foot facility, strategically located at 6430-B County Road 16A, aims to offer an accessible and vibrant environment for sports players. While pickleball will be the facility’s primary offering initially, the owner, Dipak Patel, has stated that additional sports could be added if the demand is there.

“That’s tentatively what we want to do. If there’s demand, we will add more.” – (Dipak Patel)

The site for this project spans 2.1 acres, and the development will include eight pickleball courts, five of which will be enclosed and three open-air. With 24 parking spaces planned, the facility is designed with convenience in mind, providing ample room for visitors.

According to Patel, the facility’s success will be largely determined by the demand, but it’s clear that the community stands to benefit greatly from this initiative.

A Hub for Pickleball and Community Engagement

The facility is located near the SilverLeaf community and promises to become a vital gathering spot for local residents. This is especially significant given the area’s growing population, with approximately 50,000 people living within a 10-mile radius of the facility.

“There are 50,000 people living within the Silverleaf 10-mile radius. Particularly, given our local weather issues, an indoor facility would allow people across the age spectrum to exercise year-round.” – (Dipak Patel)

Patel emphasized the importance of having a space for year-round exercise, citing how the indoor courts will offer a solution to weather-related disruptions. Whether it’s the summer heat or winter chill, this facility will allow pickleball players of all ages to stay active and connected, regardless of the season.

The social impact of such a facility cannot be understated. With a focus on strengthening community bonds, this project is expected to provide a central location for residents to meet, socialize, and maintain an active lifestyle.

“It will give people in the county an important gathering spot to strengthen the social bonds that make our community vibrant and strong. This will have a significant impact on the physical and mental health of our citizens.” – (Dipak Patel)

As Patel puts it, the facility will contribute significantly to the mental and physical health of the community by offering a place for everyone to come together and enjoy a common passion.

Pickleball’s Rapid Growth and Its Role in the Community

The timing of this facility is particularly relevant in light of the continuing rise of pickleball’s popularity. According to the 2024 Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) Topline Participation Report, pickleball has seen a dramatic increase in participation, with 13.6 million players in the U.S. in 2023 alone.

The sport has experienced a 51.8% growth from 2022 to 2023 and a staggering 223.5% growth in the past four years. This surge in interest underscores the need for dedicated spaces where players can enjoy the sport, and this new facility could be just the right place for many in the St. Augustine area.
