Pickleball in Glen Carbon: The new pickleball courts at Miner Park in Glen Carbon are fast approaching completion, marking a significant upgrade to the park’s recreational facilities. Construction began in early September, and while the substantial completion date is set for Nov. 30, the completion is expected by Dec. 31.

Transformation of the Courts

Miner Park, located at 194 South Main Street, will soon feature six new pickleball courts, replacing the area’s previous two tennis courts. This transformation is part of a broader recreational upgrade that includes new post-tensioned concrete, fencing, nets, court surfacing, and additional grading to integrate the courts with existing sidewalks.

Key Features of the Project

  • New Surface: Post-tensioned concrete for durability.
  • Enhanced Facilities: New nets, fencing, and court surfacing.
  • Updated Layout: Grading adjustments to align with sidewalks.

Approval and Funding

The shift from tennis courts to pickleball courts was approved by the Glen Carbon Village Board on July 9. The transformation is part of the Schon Park Phase 3 project, with Byrne & Jones Construction winning the contract bid of $412,601.

To assist with funding, the village secured two grants: a $100,000 DECO grant (Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity) and a $76,324 PEP grant (Park Enhancement Program).

The development of these pickleball courts aims to cater to the growing interest in the sport, offering local residents more opportunities to engage in recreational activities.
