Southeast Sportsplex to bring Pickleball Courts: The South End will soon welcome the “Southeast Sportsplex Health and Fitness Club”, a new facility set to open next year on David Street. A unique feature of the Sportsplex will be its dedicated pickleball courts, catering to the growing demand for this rapidly expanding sport. The club will also provide batting cages, golf simulators, basketball, and fitness training, but pickleball is expected to be a key draw for players of all ages and skill levels.
Supporting Local Pickleball and Beyond
In addition to recreational play, the pickleball courts are designed to accommodate clinics, group lessons, and league matches. The club’s emphasis on community engagement will complement existing programs like the South End Baseball League while creating new opportunities for athletes to train and compete year-round. With space for 250 people in its recreation area, the Sportsplex aims to become a hub for pickleball and other sports in the region.
Revitalizing a Historic Space
Located at 11 David Street, the facility is part of the Waterfront Mill Redevelopment District, which promotes the adaptive reuse of mill buildings. Currently home to North East Silicon Technologies, the building will be transformed into a recreational hub with modern amenities, including storage and warehouse areas to support the club’s operations.
The Planning Board has unanimously approved the project, with construction expected to take two to three months after permitting. Parking is not anticipated to be a significant issue, though restrictions will apply at the nearby intersection of David Street and East Rodney French Boulevard.
Excitement Builds for Pickleball and More
Local leaders have expressed their support for the project, highlighting its potential to boost neighborhood activity and provide much-needed recreational space. Ward 6 City Councilor Ryan Pereira noted,
“I think a recreational space particularly in this area is going to be a great benefit to the neighborhood and the city as a whole.” – (Ryan Pereira)
