Alabaster’s Pickleball Expansion: The city of Alabaster has expanded its pickleball offerings with the addition of three new courts at Patriots Park. This expansion, made possible through a partnership with Shelby County, highlights the city’s continued support of the rapidly growing sport. The Alabaster City Council approved the construction of these courts during a meeting on July 22. With the addition of these new courts, Patriots Park now boasts six pickleball courts for local players.
“We greatly appreciate our strong partnership with Shelby County in making this project possible. Pickleball has proven extremely popular at our courts at Patriots Park and Veterans Park, and we’re happy to be able to provide these new courts for our community.” – (Neal Wagner, Alabaster’s Public Relations Manager)
Expanded Facilities Address Community Needs
The new courts are located next to the existing ones but are larger to meet the specifications set by the sport’s governing body. To accommodate player feedback regarding sun glare, the new courts have been rotated 90 degrees to face a different direction. Additionally, fencing has been installed between each court to ensure a better playing experience.
A Collaborative Effort for a Growing Sport
The construction was made possible through a memorandum of understanding between the city of Alabaster and the Shelby County Park and Recreation Authority, which managed the project’s site work. The city allocated $20,279.64 for the construction of the courts and entered into agreements with various contractors for additional work.
C&W Concrete Construction, Inc. handled the concrete work at a cost of $44,715, while S&G Waldrop Electric Inc. provided the electrical services for $37,000. The city also partnered with Musco Sports Lighting LLC to install lighting, with costs not exceeding $37,500. Metro Fence was contracted to provide fencing for the new courts at a price of $14,936.
The City’s Commitment to Growing the Sport
These new additions to Patriots Park follow the initial opening of the park in August 2023. Alabaster residents now have access to a total of 14 pickleball courts across the city, with eight available at Veterans Park and six at Patriots Park. The city’s investment in these facilities shows Alabaster’s commitment to providing top-notch recreational opportunities for its growing community of pickleball players.
