Columbia Plans Pickleball Expansion at Albert-Oakland Park with New Additions

Pickleball Expansion at Albert-Oakland Park: The Columbia City Council is set to vote Monday night on a proposal that would significantly expand pickleball facilities at Albert-Oakland Park. The upgrades are part of a broader renovation plan that also includes improvements to park shelters and playground equipment. The pickleball courts, in particular, are getting a major boost, with the addition of new courts and the conversion of existing tennis courts into dedicated pickleball spaces.

Expansion Plans and Timeline

The proposed upgrade would increase the number of pickleball courts at Albert-Oakland Park to 16. The conversion of an existing tennis court complex will add four new pickleball courts to the facility.

These upgrades will be funded by the 2021 park sales tax, with a total cost of $640,000. Work is scheduled to begin this month, and the project is expected to be completed by spring 2026, according to a city staff memo.

Collaboration with the Show-Me Pickleball Club

The Show-Me Pickleball Club is playing a key role in the expansion, donating nets and posts for the new pickleball courts. Once the project is finished, the park will have two adjacent outdoor pickleball facilities, offering ample space for players as the sport continues to grow in popularity.

Pickleball Court Conversion

In addition to the new courts, the project will convert a dual-use tennis and pickleball facility into a dedicated pickleball complex. This conversion will eliminate the remaining tennis court, making the park an even more prominent destination for pickleball players. The conversion aims to meet the growing demand for the sport while addressing the deteriorating condition of the existing asphalt courts.
