Meijer Park’s Pickleball Courts: Meijer Park, once known as the Meijer Skate Park in Brighton, has undergone a significant transformation and is set to become the go-to destination for outdoor activities, with pickleball courts at the forefront. The Southeastern Livingston County Recreation Authority (SELCRA) has turned the park into a multi-sport hub, focusing on creating a safe, accessible space for the entire community to enjoy.
The Evolution of Meijer Park
The former skate park, located behind Meijer and next to St. Pat’s School, had long been in disrepair, with broken concrete and an outdated skatepad. In 2020, SELCRA began a revitalization project, replacing deteriorating tracks with soccer and baseball fields, though the remnants of the old skate park remained. This led to a much-needed transformation, with the goal of creating a more functional and inclusive recreational space.
Backed by $65,000 contributions from Green Oak and Brighton Townships, SELCRA completed the transformation, which now includes two basketball courts, pickleball courts, and an expansive grass field. The revamped space will officially be called Meijer Park, and the new pickleball courts are expected to draw significant interest from players.
Pickleball Takes Center Stage
Pickleball, a rapidly growing sport, now has a dedicated home in Meijer Park. The addition of pickleball courts is a major draw for the community, offering a much-needed space for players of all ages and skill levels.
SELCRA Director Jason Spiller emphasized that the redesign allows for expanded programming, particularly for pickleball, and that the park is set to accommodate future growth in the sport.
The grand opening for Meijer Park is scheduled for Saturday, April 26th, 2024, with the park open daily from June 7th to September 1st. From dawn to dusk, the park will provide ample time for community members to enjoy pickleball and other outdoor activities.
A Safe and Accessible Park for All
Safety was a key priority in the park’s redesign. The old skate park had steep walls and broken concrete, creating hazards that made the space unsafe for visitors. With the new design, SELCRA has created a safer environment, where pickleball players can enjoy the courts without concerns over safety issues.
The expanded space also allows for other activities, and SELCRA plans to host various leagues and events, including pickleball tournaments.
In addition to the park’s improvements, SELCRA has moved its offices to a new facility at 7540 Whitmore Lake Road, further expanding its community offerings. The new park, along with the facility, will help solidify SELCRA’s role as a key provider of recreational opportunities in the area.
