Invented in 1965 as a backyard game for children, pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Over the past five years, it has evolved into one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States and beyond. By last year, more than 8.9 million Americans were estimated to have taken up the game, drawn to its simple rules and welcoming environment.

“Pickleball game has been the fastest-growing sport in America for the past few years. I am very excited to introduce it as a club sport at Tiffin University while enhancing the student-athletes collegiate experience and providing partial scholarships,” said Charlie Massi, Tiffin University’s Director of Club and Recreation Sports.
Pickleball’s Popularity Among Gen Z
A Civic Science survey highlights pickleball’s strong appeal among Gen Z. Of nearly 17,000 respondents surveyed in the first seven months of the year, 12% of players were aged 18–24, making this demographic the sport’s largest segment. This trend underscores pickleball’s growing influence on younger generations and its potential to thrive in collegiate settings like Tiffin.
