From Amateur to Champion- The Man Behind Buffalo’s 1st Pickleball Medal

The Man Behind Buffalo’s 1st Pickleball Medal: Local pickleballer Craig Plante etched his name into Buffalo’s history books by clinching the city’s first-ever gold medal in pickleball. Competing alongside his doubles partner, Sam Dia of Casper, the duo dominated their category at the Lapiplasty World Pickleball Championship in Dallas. Their journey to nationals was equally impressive, having won the 60+ doubles state championship with ease. Notably, they defeated younger teams along the way to “prove a point,” Plante joked.

At nationals, the pair saved their best for last, delivering a crushing victory in the championship match. “We beat them 11-2, 11-3, which is a slaughter, really,” Plante said. “That was the easiest game all day.”

Building a Winning Partnership

Despite limited opportunities to practice together before the tournament, Plante and Dia quickly found their rhythm. Their contrasting playing styles created a unique synergy on the court.

“I haven’t played with him a lot, but I know that he’s a good player,” Plante said. “He’s like a ping-pong player… He’s got all these trick shots. With him going crazy and me being steady, we worked out great.”

The Allure of Pickleball

Plante emphasized the sport’s social and welcoming atmosphere. “Pickleball is the most social, fun sport there is,” he said. Its accessibility, even for beginners, makes it widely appealing. “I could hand you a paddle and a ball and say, ‘Hit it over the net.’ Pretty soon, you’d be having fun,” he added.

For Plante, pickleball became an obsession after discovering the Cloud Peak Pickleball Club. Motivated to climb the skill ladder, he quickly advanced to the top court. “Pretty soon, I was just a regular on court one, and they could never get me off again,” he said.

Eyes on the Future

While proud of his achievements, Plante’s competitive drive remains insatiable. He practices daily, often for hours, and is already eyeing new challenges. “If I won gold, gold, gold, swept them all next year, I would have to play in the group above, or something,” he said.

Plante’s gold medal symbolizes more than personal victory; it reflects the support and camaraderie of Buffalo’s pickleball community. “Everything that I did was because I learned through them,” he said. “It’s cool that the club has a champion. I’m super happy to represent Cloud Peak.”
