Saratoga’s Pickleball Community: Pickleball players packed the Saratoga Recreation Commission meeting Monday night, voicing concerns over potential fee increases set for the new year. The proposed changes could significantly impact the affordability of their sport, a concern that drew a surprising crowd to the typically quiet monthly gathering.
“Wow! We appreciate everyone coming in and advocating for yourselves. This committee is not trying to make pickleball unaffordable.” – (Recreation President Megan James)
Currently, players enjoy access to pickleball through a gym membership or a $5 drop-in fee. However, Recreation Director Carter Edwards proposed treating pickleball sessions as private functions due to the recent establishment of a non-profit organization by the players.
The Players’ Perspective
Pickleball organizer Cindy Carnes expressed regret over the unintended consequences of forming a non-profit.
“If we [pickleball players] knew we were going to be punished for organizing, then we never would have done it. We just organized so that we could get grants and work with the town to improve already existing facilities.” – (Cindy Carnes)
Players also highlighted that their hours of play are during off-peak times, ensuring minimal disruption to gym usage. Cindy Loose underscored the broader impact of affordability on community well-being.
“If you increase the cost of pickleball, then the already off-peak hours will remain empty. [Making pickleball unaffordable] will affect the future health of our community.” – (Cindy Loose)
Liability and Payment Concerns
Edwards noted challenges in tracking liability and collecting payments from the growing number of players. A potential solution involving QR codes to streamline liability waivers and payments was suggested but not finalized. Councilman Bub Barkhurst applauded the turnout and the constructive dialogue.
“It is way easier to make decisions and develop plans when a consensus of the people is heard.” – (Bub Barkhurst)
Next Steps
After 50 minutes of discussion, the commission deferred any decisions and proposed a workshop to explore the fee structure further. The next Recreation Commission meeting is scheduled for January 6, 2025, at 6 p.m. in Saratoga Town Hall.
