New Pickleball Courts Ready for Action: After more than a year of careful planning and going through bureaucratic processes, Section Park has officially opened four new pickleball courts to the public. This initiative, championed by Section Mayor Rick Hanback, began when he proposed the idea to the town council a year ago.
Overcoming the Red Tape
Once the town council approved the plan, the Section had to work closely with the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA). The task was to convert the existing tennis courts into four pickleball courts, along with a half-basketball court.
The decision to repurpose the space was driven by the hope that the new facilities would draw more visitors than the underused tennis courts. After securing approval, the courts took an additional three months of preparation before they were ready for play on Nov. 22.
Still a Work in Progress
While the courts are open, the half basketball court is still a work in progress. Though the hoop is in place, the lines for the court have yet to be painted. Town officials expect this addition to be completed in the coming weeks.
Rules and Guidelines
To ensure the courts remain well-maintained, users are asked to pick up after themselves and be respectful of the space.
The courts have a curfew of 10 p.m., with lights set on a timer for evening use. Whether playing pickleball or shooting hoops, the new courts are available for public use at the corner of Dutton Road and Church Street in Section.

Section Park has officially opened four new pickleball courts, following over a year of planning and coordination with the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. The courts, along with a half basketball court, were created to offer more recreational opportunities in the area.
While the pickleball courts are ready for use, the basketball court still needs line markings. The courts are open to the public with rules for upkeep and a 10 p.m. curfew.
