South Point Approves Pickleball Courts as Community Improvements Take Shape

South Point Approves Pickleball Courts: The Village of South Point has approved a contract to pour concrete for two new pickleball courts, marking a significant recreational addition to the community. According to Mayor Jeff Gaskin, the pickleball courts will be built on the north end of the village park. While the village will cover expenses for fencing and related items, the most significant cost—the concrete—is being funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Gaskin noted the ARPA funds, a COVID-19 relief package signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2021, needed to be allocated by the end of the year. The pickleball courts are expected to be ready for public use by spring.

Holiday Festivities and Community Events

In addition to park improvements, the village is gearing up for its annual Christmas caroling event, scheduled for Monday, Dec. 16. Participants will gather at the community center at 5:30 p.m. before embarking on a hayride through the village, concluding with hot chocolate at the community center.

This event, in its second year, will coincide with “Christmas in the Village,” hosted by People for the Point from 6–9 p.m. The free event will feature appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus, bringing holiday cheer to attendees.

Quiet Council Meeting and Village Updates

During the village council’s meeting on Tuesday, Mayor Gaskin described proceedings as relatively uneventful. The main highlight was the passing of an ordinance allowing side-by-side vehicles within the village.

Applications for permits are now available at the police station. Additionally, council members began preliminary discussions on budget planning, and an executive session on personnel matters was held with no decisions made.

Fire Levy to Fund New Engine

The recently approved fire levy, passed by voters in November, will take effect next month, providing much-needed funding for the fire department. Mayor Gaskin stated that the village is exploring options for purchasing a new fire engine, a necessity, as costs have risen significantly since the previous levy 30 years ago.

The estimated price for a new truck is approximately $1 million, and the village intends to thoroughly evaluate its options before proceeding.
