Glen Ellyn to Discuss New Pickleball Courts at Ackerman Park

Pickleball Courts at Ackerman Park: On December 12, Glen Ellyn’s plan commission will review a special use permit for the addition of four outdoor pickleball courts at Ackerman SFC, located at 800 St. Charles Road. The proposal, put forward by the park district, calls for the construction of the courts in the park’s northeastern corner. These courts will be unlit, fenced in, and feature a shaded 12-foot by 30-foot viewing area between them.

Park District’s Proposal Aligns with Village Code

The park district’s narrative submitted to the plan commission states that the addition of the courts meets the village’s code for “open space and passive recreation uses” within the CR Conservation/Recreation District. Village regulations allow such recreational activities only through a special use permit.

“only open space uses, and passive recreation areas are allowed by permitted use in the CR Conservation/Recreation District, and all buildings, structures and principal activity areas are allowed by special use only.” – (village code)

Location and Noise Mitigation Considerations

The courts will be situated in a more secluded area of the property, with park officials assuring that they will be designed to complement existing structures. A key concern for residents, noise, is addressed in the park district’s plan, which suggests that the sound will be mitigated by the distance to the nearest neighborhood, about 500 feet away, as well as a woodland buffer surrounding the site.

Part of a Larger Expansion Project

The new pickleball courts are part of the Ackerman SFC expansion, included in a broader $15.9 million bond referendum that was passed by voters in 2022. This expansion aims to maintain and enhance the park’s facilities, making it a central hub for recreation in Glen Ellyn.
