Normandy Park Halts Pickleball Court Plans: In an unexpected turn of events, the Normandy Park City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday night to cancel plans for a new pickleball court near City Hall. The decision came during a heated public meeting where residents voiced strong opposition, citing noise concerns and a lack of transparency.
Community Backlash Stops Pickleball Plans
Residents arrived at the meeting in large numbers, armed with well-prepared arguments against the sports court. Concerns about noise disrupting their quiet neighborhood dominated the discussion. Many expressed anger over not being informed of the pickleball court proposal until after its approval during last month’s meeting.
In November, the council approved the bid for the courts contingent on notifying the neighborhood immediately, leaving the door open to rescind approval if significant objections arose. After hearing the passionate public opposition, the council unanimously voted to cancel the project, with no plans to revisit the topic.
Limited Support Amid Budget Concerns
The pickleball court proposal originated from a community survey showing significant support for the project. However, critics pointed out that only 109 residents—about 1% of the city’s population—favored the courts. Residents suggested redirecting the $400,000 budget toward other improvements, such as leveling walkways and covering the existing basketball court for year-round use.
Councilmember Mike Bishoff expressed frustration, emphasizing the city’s extensive outreach efforts. He noted that residents had ample opportunities to share their views before the council’s initial approval but waited until the project gained traction to voice opposition.
City Manager Amy Arrington urged residents to stay informed through weekly city updates, available via the Normandy Park website. She encouraged signing up for email alerts and reaching out directly to council members.
Indoor Recreation Center Proposed
While rejecting the outdoor courts, Councilmember Shawn MacAvoy reiterated support for a fully indoor recreational facility where pickleball could be played without noise issues. However, the ambitious project faces financial hurdles requiring significant funding.
Councilmember Susan West, firmly against the outdoor courts, stated she would oppose any project negatively impacting residents or pets in Normandy Park. She highlighted alternative venues, like The Cove, for pickleball enthusiasts.
Winterfest Brings Joy to Normandy Park
Amid the debate, the council celebrated a successful Winterfest event, which drew visitors from across the region. Councilmember West praised the festive atmosphere, featuring activities like a decoration exchange and the presentation of a Key to the City to Santa Claus. Planning for Winterfest 2025 is expected to begin soon, offering residents an opportunity to contribute.
News in Brief: Normandy Park Halts Pickleball Court Plans
The Normandy Park City Council canceled plans for a new pickleball court near City Hall following strong public opposition during a December 10 meeting. Concerns centered on noise and a lack of transparency. Residents suggested reallocating the $400,000 budget to public safety improvements and recreational enhancements. While the council remains open to indoor recreational projects, financial challenges persist. Meanwhile, the city celebrated a successful Winterfest, marking a positive end to the year.
