Winona Lions Club Raises Funds for New Pickleball Courts at Sobieski Park

New Pickleball Courts at Sobieski Park: The Winona Lions Club is raising funds to build new pickleball and basketball courts at Sobieski Park. The project, which aims to replace the two existing tennis courts with six pickleball courts and add a new basketball court, has received support from the city council. The new courts could be completed in about two years.

A Long-Awaited Project

The city has planned to update Sobieski Park’s courts for years, but previous efforts were not funded. The city hopes this community-driven fundraiser will help make the project a reality.

Community Involvement

Lions Club President Jack Krage and Winona Director of Parks and Facilities Patrick Menton met with residents on December 11 to discuss the plan.

While many residents supported the project, some raised concerns about potential noise from the pickleball courts. Menton assured that noise would be minimal, but steps could be taken to reduce it further.

Project Details and Funding

The total cost of the project is estimated at $296,000. It includes resurfacing the basketball court, installing six new pickleball courts, and adding amenities like benches and trash cans. The city council expressed appreciation for the Lions Club’s efforts, with Councilmember Steve Young calling it a “huge help” for funding park improvements.

“There’s so many demands on the pocketbook of the city … There are 10 requests for every dollar we have. Certainly, resurfacing these courts is expensive; it’s a high priority.” – (Steve Young)

Impact on the Community

Pickleball, a fast-growing sport, is popular among all ages and could bring more visitors to Sobieski Park. The new courts also open up opportunities for events like tournaments, which could help fund future maintenance. With a two-year timeline, the project aims to meet the rising demand for recreational space in the city.
