Brawley’s Growing Pickleball Scene: Tournament Raises Funds for Future Pickleball Courts

Brawley’s Growing Pickleball Scene: The Imperial Valley Pickleball Association (IVPA) held its inaugural pickleball tournament at the Lions Center in Brawley this past weekend. A total of 47 recreational players, ranging in age from 19 to 77, participated in the event, which aimed to raise funds for the development of a public pickleball court in Brawley. The tournament was not only a competitive show of skill but also an important step toward expanding pickleball access in the area.

“This is our first fundraiser as an organization and something we have been planning for a while. We’re hoping to raise money to revitalize Meserve Park and add Pickleball courts to their tennis courts as well.” – (IVPA President Janet Stills)

The goal of the tournament was to gather support and funds to help create a space dedicated to pickleball in the Imperial Valley, where there currently is no public court available.

A Growing Need for Pickleball in the Imperial Valley

Pickleball, one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S., has seen increasing interest across the country, including in smaller communities like Brawley. However, despite its popularity, there is no public place in the Imperial Valley for people to regularly play the game. This lack of facilities has motivated the IVPA to take action and raise awareness for the cause.

“The Lions Center and the City of Brawley have been very welcoming with us and we currently play here at the Lions Center where we share the courts with Basketball and day camp events, both very important uses for the Lions Center, and we hope to be able to one day add Meserve Park as a public place of play for this sport for anyone interested in the future.” – (Janet Stills)

The fundraising tournament is just the beginning of the IVPA’s mission to secure a dedicated pickleball space for the local community. Meserve Park, with its existing tennis courts, is a potential site for the addition of pickleball courts.

Tournament Highlights: Doubles and Singles Competitions

The two-day event included a doubles tournament on Saturday, followed by a singles competition on Sunday. Players were divided into divisions based on their experience levels, ensuring a competitive but fun experience for all involved. The event was organized by Dominick Reyes, a local pickleball player and one of the driving forces behind the tournament.

“The tournament represented a need or demand for our local community to have more activities they can do with their downtime. Furthermore, the fundraising for Meserve Park shows that the Imperial Valley Pickleball Association and others are all willing to come together to improve our community. No matter how small of a contribution. We look forward to running affordable quarterly pickleball tournaments, and all levels of play are welcome.” – (Dominick Reyes)

This weekend’s event demonstrated the growing interest in pickleball, as players of all ages and skill levels came together to enjoy the sport and support a shared cause. For many, it was more than just a competition — it was an opportunity to engage with the local community while promoting a healthier lifestyle.

The Health Benefits of Pickleball

In addition to being fun and social, pickleball offers significant health benefits. The sport provides an excellent cardiovascular workout, which is especially important in the Imperial Valley, where obesity and diabetes rates are high. With its low-impact nature, pickleball offers a way for people of all ages to stay active and healthy in a supportive environment.

“It is the diligence, care, and love of the sport that brought the Pickleball community all together. We hope to eventually create opportunities for others with the reconstruction of the tennis/pickleball courts.” – (Dominick Reyes)

The IVPA believes that by expanding pickleball access, they can help promote healthier lifestyles while also fostering social connections. The tournament showed how passionate the local community is about making this vision a reality.

Looking Ahead: More Opportunities for Pickleball in Brawley

While the push for a public pickleball court in Brawley continues, players can still enjoy the sport at the Lions Center, where courts are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., with additional times coming after the recreational basketball season ends in March.

The success of this first fundraising tournament suggests that pickleball’s popularity in the area will continue to grow. As the IVPA plans to host affordable quarterly tournaments, they aim to build a larger, more inclusive pickleball community in the Imperial Valley.

With the ongoing efforts to create more places to play and opportunities to compete, the future of pickleball in the Imperial Valley looks promising. The IVPA’s commitment to raising funds, expanding facilities, and offering inclusive events ensures that the sport will be accessible to more people, providing health benefits and opportunities for community building in the years to come.
