USA Pickleball Unveils 2025 Rulebook with Major Changes, Including Rally Scoring

USA Pickleball Unveils 2025 Rulebook: USA Pickleball, the national authority for pickleball in the U.S., has unveiled its 2025 Rulebook. Featuring new updates, including an optional rally scoring format, the rulebook will take effect on January 1, 2025. Players and enthusiasts can access it for free on usapickleball.org starting December 17, 2024, or purchase a print version in the new year.

Rally Scoring Makes Its Debut

The introduction of rally scoring in certain doubles and singles plays is the standout feature of the updated rules. While traditional side-out scoring remains the primary method, rally scoring will be allowed under specific circumstances during tournament play. According to USA Pickleball CEO Mike Nealy, the change is designed to enhance the game’s appeal for players and fans alike.

“USA Pickleball is excited to release the official 2025 Rulebook featuring the introduction of a rally scoring option for certain doubles play and an option extension for singles play,” (Mike Nealy).

“While traditional scoring remains the official method, these new formats are a response to valuable player feedback. Rally scoring, introduced under specific circumstances for tournament play only, is designed to create a more dynamic and engaging experience for both players and spectators.

Guardrails and clear guidelines ensure this option complements—rather than replaces—traditional scoring, maintaining the integrity and flow of the game.”(Mike Nealy)

What Changes to Expect

Rally scoring, which awards a point on every rally regardless of the serving team, has been provisionally approved for:

  • Doubles play: Round-robin and team formats.
  • Singles play: Expanded from previous provisional use.

Traditional side-out scoring will still apply to Golden Ticket tournaments and the USA Pickleball National Championships in November 2025. The new scoring method will be optional for other recreational and sanctioned tournaments, allowing organizers to tailor formats to their audiences.

Additional Rule Updates

The 2025 Rulebook also addresses:

  • Clarifications on the start of volley play.
  • Adjustments to round-robin scoring rules.
  • Player carryover penalties for smoother enforcement.

The updates were developed following a review of over 180 proposals from players, members, and global participants. USA Pickleball aims to balance innovation with respect for the game’s traditions.

Looking Ahead

These changes reflect USA Pickleball’s commitment to evolving the sport while maintaining its essence. By incorporating player feedback, the organization hopes to sustain pickleball’s rapid growth and engage broader audiences.
