Seneca Pickleball Tournament Raises Funds: $10,000 for Oconee Addiction Recovery

Seneca Pickleball Tournament Raises Funds: More than 60 pickleball players gathered at South Cove County Park in Seneca for a tournament that raised $10,000 for addiction recovery programs in the Walhalla area. This pickleball event, held in late October, supported Christ Central Ministries’ men’s and women’s substance abuse recovery programs. Tournament director Jim Corey said while the amount raised was slightly less than the previous year, many contributors have switched to monthly donations.

The Role of the Recovery Programs

The funds from the tournament will go towards supporting the Oconee Addiction and Recovery Solutions (OARS) men’s program and Magnolia House, its sister program. Ashley Williams, director of Christ Central Ministries, highlighted the significance of the recovery programs. “We have a lot of work within the Oconee County Detention Center, offering a transition from detention to recovery programs for both men and women,” Williams said. In 2024, a combined 132 people have graduated from the programs.

Supporting Recovery Through Community Engagement

Leslie Spearman, a mentor and teacher at Magnolia House, spoke about the focus of the recovery programs.

“We try to focus on community engagement,” (Leslie Spearman).

Spearman, who works with both women at Magnolia House and detainees at the Oconee Detention Center, explained how the program involves participants in local activities, such as parades or meals. This approach helps prevent the feeling of institutionalization often seen in more traditional rehab centers.

Spearman also mentioned the value of certificates given to participants who complete the course.

“These certificates can help in court decisions, allowing them to receive rehab instead of a sentence,” (Leslie Spearman).

Impact of the Event

The pickleball tournament is an example of how the community is supporting local addiction recovery efforts. Jim Corey believes events like this can help make a significant impact.

“The pickleball community is very giving. It’s a social event, and it’s a great way to meet people, learn about causes, and have fun,” (Jim Corey).

This pickleball fundraiser helps continue the important work being done by OARS and Magnolia House, providing recovery support while also connecting people through sports and community activities.
