Pickleball Creates Families for Inmates: On a Friday morning just before Thanksgiving, the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution gym was filled with the sounds of pickleball. Inmates volleyed the ball back and forth, guided by coach Angelo Rossetti and his twin brother, Ettore, who wore matching jerseys. Joining them was professional pickleball player Ava Ignatowich, eager to contribute to the prison’s transformative program.
Ignatowich, a Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Tour athlete, marveled at the inmates’ dedication.
“Normally when I teach clinics, I’ll get some pushback,”. “But everyone here listens with their eyes the size of quarters. They really want to learn and get better.”(Ava Ignatowich)
A Life-Changing Experience
One standout player, Losgar, known as “The face of MacDougall pickleball,” showcased his skills during the clinic. Losgar, a gym worker at the facility, relished the chance to play against Ignatowich. Despite being teased for each lost point, he enjoyed testing his abilities against a professional.
Pickleball has brought Losgar a sense of pride and connection. His family, including his 11-year-old son, Jaylyn, watches clips of him playing, cherishing his smiles. Losgar hopes to share the joy of pickleball with his son, encouraging him to take up the sport.
Potential Beyond Prison
Rossetti and gym supervisor Alvarez see a bright future for Losgar in pickleball. Alvarez described him as agile and focused, with strong hand-eye coordination. “He has all the tools in his bag.
“When he leaves here, he really has the opportunity to play professional pickleball and make some money doing that.”(Alvarez)
Although flattered, Losgar is unsure about pursuing a pro career. His priority upon release is to be a good father and husband. Still, he remains open to the idea if the timing is right, aspiring to inspire his son and others with his journey of transformation.
A Lasting Impact
Pickleball has left a deep mark on Losgar’s life. Reflecting on his experience, he shared,
“I’m a different person when I play. Angelo has helped me just enjoy it and be in the moment. It’s changed my attitude because it’s so joyous.”( Joseph Losgar)
With a maximum release date in 2029 and potential parole as early as next year, Losgar dreams of bringing the positive energy of pickleball into the outside world. For him, the sport is more than a game—it’s a symbol of hope and a path to a better future.
