PlayIT! Complex Introduces New Payment System: PlayIT! Multi-Sports Complex in Grand Forks will change its business model, requiring patrons to pay for each session of activities starting January 1. Memberships will only remain for Grand Cities Pickleball Club events held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. President Bill Spatz announced the new structure on the facility’s Facebook page.
New Pricing Model for Sports Activities
Beginning in the new year, PlayIT! will no longer offer memberships for most activities. Patrons can still reserve online but must pay each time they use the golf simulators, batting cages, or pickleball courts. This shift comes as the facility faces challenges after three years of operation in Grand Forks.
Spatz explained that despite efforts and investments exceeding $1 million, the complex has struggled to attract enough members and daily users to sustain its operations.
“Between the foundation and the owner of the shopping center, we have spent over $1 million to make this dream come true. Unfortunately we have not been able to create a large enough membership and daily users to maintain the current operations as the foundation’s commitment was for three years.” – (Bill Spatz)
Plans to Revitalize the Facility
To help the business recover, Spatz outlined several potential strategies. These include seeking city or state grants, exploring partnerships with local organizations, and even the possibility of opening a casino in collaboration with a charitable organization.
“We are attempting to create the largest gaming/sports facility/bar/restaurant in the state for people to gather, play and socialize.” – (Bill Spatz)
Spatz also mentioned that PlayIT! is opening the PlayIT! Grill soon, which could attract more visitors.
“We’re hoping with serving alcohol we’ll create a more vibrant atmosphere. If we do get gambling at some point, which I think we will, if the city approves it, then it really opens the place up.” – (Bill Spatz)
The facility is also applying for a beer and wine license to enhance its offerings.
A Look Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities
With the introduction of the new pricing model, PlayIT! aims to attract more users while maintaining its core offerings. However, Spatz cautioned that without significant changes, the facility might struggle when the new Altru Indoor Sports and Aquatics Center opens in 2027.
“If things don’t change, PlayIT! could be out of business.” – (Bill Spatz)
Spatz suggested that purchasing his old TJ Maxx building could help reduce costs for the city Park District’s new center by up to 80%. This could create a more sustainable sports environment in Grand Forks.
The Future of PlayIT! Complex
While the future remains uncertain, Spatz is hopeful about the potential changes.
“It’s not dire, dire, but the path we were on was a dead end. We’re hoping there are some things in the works that will help support it.” – (Bill Spatz)
He believes the introduction of gambling could also open new avenues for the facility, making it a more appealing destination for sports and social activities.
As PlayIT! transitions to this new model, the community will be watching closely to see how these changes unfold and whether they can turn the complex into a vibrant hub for sports and entertainment.
