Melissa Ownby Becomes APP’s 4th Female Head Referee: Melissa Ownby achieved a historic milestone at the 2025 APP Vlasic Classic Daytona Beach, becoming the fourth female APP Head Referee. Her promotion places her among an elite group of women leading officiating at the highest levels of professional pickleball.
Held at Pictona at Holly Hill from February 5-9, the APP Vlasic Classic featured 49 courts, including 12 covered courts and a 1,200-seat championship stadium. As a USA Pickleball Golden Ticket Event, the tournament attracted top players, but Ownby’s appointment was one of the event’s most significant moments.
A Leader in Officiating
Ownby played a key role in managing a team of 53 USAP-certified referees, ensuring smooth gameplay and fair competition. She has long been a respected referee educator in the APP/ARDI Program under Mark Peifer and now steps into this leadership role alongside APP Director of Referees, Mike Baumgardner.

APP Founder Ken Herrmann lauded Ownby’s leadership, stating,
