APP New York City Pickleball Event: The 2025 APP New York City Open is set to return to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, from May 20–25. This major pickleball event will once again turn the iconic U.S. Open tennis venue into a hub for one of America’s fastest-growing sports.
Event Draws Pros and Amateurs Alike
The fourth annual tournament will welcome over 1,400 athletes from across the U.S., including top professionals and amateur players of all ages and skill levels. Competitors will play for titles and a share of the $150,000 prize pool.
The event will feature divisions like the AARP Champions Division and the Humana Cup. It is also a USA Pickleball Golden Ticket event and the sixth of twelve stops on the 2025 APP Tour.
Broadcast on ESPN2 and ESPN+
This year’s competition will be broadcast nationwide on ESPN2 and ESPN+, bringing more visibility to the sport. APP, which launched in 2019, helped turn recreational pickleball into a professional sport with prize money and tour events.
Historic Venue Adds Prestige
The tournament made headlines in 2022 by hosting its event at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center—the first time the U.S. Open venue had been used for pickleball. Temporary court transformations have allowed pickleball to thrive at this legendary location.
Growing Popularity Post-Pandemic
Pickleball’s rise in popularity surged after the COVID-19 pandemic as people looked for socially distant ways to stay active. Since then, it has expanded from a senior-friendly game to a nationwide competitive sport. The Sports and Fitness Industry Association named it the fastest-growing sport in the U.S. from 2021 to 2024.
More Than Just Matches
In addition to competition, the week-long event will include player clinics, pro tips, and live demonstrations. Organizers say the APP continues to expand nationally, bringing the sport to new cities and fanbases every year.
