Chris Haworth Faces His Best Partner: The Association of Pickleball Players (APP) made a significant mark in Southern California as the world’s premier pickleball players gathered at the Tennis and Pickleball Club at Newport Beach. Over five days, the OWL APP Newport Beach Open showed not only professional but also amateur players, drawing a capacity crowd eager to witness the top talents in the sport. The event resulted in five thrilling gold medal matches, each one a testament to the growing popularity of pickleball.

A Weekend of Firsts

Amanda Hendry made history by securing her first two APP Tour gold medals, while Max Manthou matched her achievement with a pair of gold medals. Chris Haworth continued to establish his dominance in the sport, adding another men’s singles title to his impressive career.

In a proud moment for local fans, Santa Monica’s Christine Maddox captured her first APP Tour gold medal in her home state, echoing the sentiments of victory shared by longtime pickleball veteran Simone Jardim, who teamed up with Amanda Hendry to take the women’s doubles title. Adding to the excitement, Erik Lange further solidified his successful 2024 season by clinching gold in men’s doubles.

Men’s Pro Singles: A Showdown of Champions

The championship action kicked off with a familiar face-off in men’s pro singles. Four-time defending champion Chris Haworth squared off against his doubles partner, Grayson Goldin, for the gold medal.

Once again, Chris Haworth proved why he’s among the elite in men’s singles, showing remarkable skill and focus as he cruised to victory with scores of 15-7 and 15-9, securing his fifth consecutive gold medal.

“It was just one of those days for me. Every shot I was hitting seemed to be landing and dipping below the net. Last year I wasn’t able to get a gold, I had five silver medals, and this year I’ve been lucky to get it done.” – (Chris Haworth)

Jack Foster added to the competitive spirit of the event by earning the bronze medal in men’s pro singles, showing the talent that continues to thrive within the sport.
