MLP Moves Forward with Big Updates but Faces Paddle Testing Issues and Collin Johns’ Social Media Outburst

MLP Moves Forward with Big Updates: MLP (Major League Pickleball) has announced several significant updates to the pickleball world, ranging from new partnerships to controversial incidents at recent events.

In the 2024 MLP Season 2 draft, a number of high-profile American pros, including Kyle Yates, Shelby Bates, Michelle Esquivel, Liz Trulock, and Wesley Gabrielson, have committed to travel to Australia for MLP’s three fall events. This is the first time US-based pros are exploring international financial opportunities on a large scale. The move could signal further global expansion for the sport and its top athletes.

MLP and DUPR Team Up for Amateur Events

MLP has also partnered with DUPR to launch Minor League Pickleball (MiLP) events at MLP tournaments. The decision comes as MLP recognizes the value of amateur players participating alongside the pros.

MiLP winners will earn a “Dream Ticket,” granting them automatic entry to the 2024 Minor League Pickleball National Championship. This move is expected to boost spectator interest and revenue by broadening the appeal of MLP events.

Testing Failures Lead to Controversy at MLP Beer City Event

Meanwhile, the MLP Beer City event faced controversy over paddle testing. Zane Navratil’s podcast revealed that the PPL (Pickleball Paddle Lab) testing system failed at the event.

Some players experienced multiple paddle failures, while others walked newly purchased paddles directly from the Pickleball Central tent only for them to fail the test as well.

One team, whose paddles failed across the board, threatened to boycott the event unless the testing was removed. As a result, PPL testing was quickly scrapped, and players were allowed to use any paddles they chose.

Vulcan Ball Announced as Official for MLP

In other news, MLP confirmed that it will use the Vulcan ball, the same ball currently used by the PPA (Professional Pickleball Association). This marks a further alignment between the two organizations as they continue to shape the future of competitive pickleball.

Collin Johns’ Controversial Rant Divides Opinion

Following a disappointing performance at MLP’s Salt Lake City event, Collin Johns posted a multi-page rant on social media expressing his deep frustration with MLP.

The post, which was leaked to the public, received a mixed response, with many seeing it as a sour grapes reaction. Johns’ comments criticized various aspects of MLP, causing a stir in the pickleball community.

Looking Ahead for MLP and Pickleball’s Growth

The moves by MLP signal significant changes in the sport’s landscape. With international events, amateur leagues, and potential changes to paddle testing and tournament formats, MLP is setting the stage for a more inclusive and expansive future.

However, the controversy surrounding paddle testing and the backlash from some players indicates that not all players are on board with the changes. The coming months will likely see more discussions and potential adjustments as MLP continues to evolve.

News in Brief: MLP Moves Forward with Big Updates

MLP announced key updates, including U.S. pros heading to Australia, a partnership with DUPR for amateur events, and the use of Vulcan balls. However, the Beer City event faced controversy over paddle testing failures, while Collin Johns sparked debate with a social media rant. MLP’s future is evolving amid mixed reactions.
