MLP 2025 Waiver Period Changes: Major League Pickleball (MLP) has adjusted its 2025 competition structure, increasing the number of waiver periods for Premier level teams. Originally set for a single waiver period on June 11, MLP has now scheduled four throughout the summer. This change could lead to major roster shakeups.

The updated waiver periods will take place after every second regular season event:
- May 6 (after MLP Columbus)
- June 3 (after MLP Phoenix)
- July 1 (after MLP San Clemente)
- July 15 (after the Mid-Season Tournament)
Each team will identify its top four protected players after these events, leaving players ranked fifth and sixth available for other teams to claim. Any team making a claim must drop one of its protected players in return.
New Waiver Process Introduced
Unlike last year, where the waiver order was based on reverse standings, teams will now participate in a Dutch Auction to make claims. Teams must submit a minimum financial bid of $1,000, which they only pay if they successfully acquire a player.
This adjustment is expected to create more competition among roster spots, particularly at the bottom of the Premier level. Non-starters across all teams will have increased opportunities to move up, while protected players must prove their worth to remain secure.
Challenger Level Waiver Period Remains Unchanged
For now, the Challenger level retains its single waiver period on June 11, following MLP Salt Lake City. This means fewer opportunities for roster changes among those six teams compared to the more flexible Premier level structure.
Impact on Players and Teams
The additional waiver periods introduce more movement within Premier level rosters. With increased player turnover, teams will have to make strategic decisions more frequently. The financial bidding aspect adds another layer of strategy, as teams must weigh the value of acquiring new talent against their budget constraints.
These changes could make mid-season adjustments more dynamic, leading to unexpected roster changes that could shift team performances. The upcoming Free Agency Drafts on March 2 and 3 will set the stage for how teams build their initial lineups before waiver activity begins in May.
News in Brief: MLP 2025 Waiver Period Changes
MLP has added four waiver periods for Premier teams in 2025, replacing the single June 11 date. Teams will bid in a Dutch Auction to claim unprotected players, adding financial strategy to roster moves. The Challenger level retains its single waiver period on June 11. Roster shakeups are expected.
