Tension Rises in Men’s Doubles
Chicago began the match strong. Callie Smith and Vivienne David won the women’s doubles point for the Slice. But Phoenix answered back when Jack Sock and Tyson McGuffin faced James Ignatowich and Max Freeman in men’s doubles.
During that match, James Ignatowich hit Jack Sock on the shoulder with a shot. Jack Sock, a four-time Grand Slam tennis winner, wasn’t thrilled.
“Yeah, he gave me a nice little love tap there in men’s doubles, but it is what it is—it’s part of the game. I thought we had targeting rules, but I guess not. So, I guess it’s free reign from here on out.” – (sock)
The targeting rules set by UPA-A in February are no longer in effect, which added to the moment’s intensity.
Sock Comes Back Strong in Singles
Each team won one mixed doubles match, leading to a DreamBreaker. Jack Sock faced James Ignatowich again—this time in singles—and got his payback. Sock outscored Ignatowich 9-3 over three rotations.
That strong effort gave Phoenix the edge. The Flames won the DreamBreaker 21-16 and walked away with the win.
Looking Ahead
The Phoenix Flames now look to carry momentum into their next event at MLP Phoenix later this month. The Chicago Slice will regroup and prepare for MLP Salt Lake City in early June.
