Blockbuster Pickleball Trade Shakes Up Texas Ranchers and California Black Bears—What’s Next for Both Teams?

Texas Ranchers and California Black Bears: On Tuesday morning, Major League Pickleball announced a trade between the Premier level’s Texas Ranchers and the Challenger level’s California Black Bears. The Texas Ranchers received Rafa Hewett and cash in exchange for Michael Loyd. The move comes as both teams look to improve before upcoming MLP events.

What the Trade Means for Texas Ranchers

The Texas Ranchers, who currently hold an 8-6 record with 27 points, added Rafa Hewett to a roster that includes Christian Alshon, Eric Oncins, Etta Tuionetoa, Tina Pisnik, and Helena Jansen. Michael Loyd had filled the third male roster spot, and Hewett will now take over that role.

Rafa Hewett struggled in his only appearance for the California Black Bears earlier this season, finishing with a 1-9 record at MLP Austin. Still, his experience makes him a strong third option behind Christian Alshon and Eric Oncins. Teams with weaker rosters may see Hewett as a potential pickup during Waiver Period #2.

Hewett is expected to play his first event with the Texas Ranchers at the Edward Jones MLP Mid-Season Tournament, which runs from July 9 to July 13 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

What the Trade Means for California Black Bears

The California Black Bears, who have a 2-3 record with 5 points, added Michael Loyd to a team that includes Juan Benitez, Lina Padegimaite, and Layne Sleeth.

Michael Loyd wasn’t a regular starter for the Texas Ranchers but saw action during the team’s final match at MLP Daytona. He impressed by going 2-0, winning both his men’s doubles and mixed doubles matches against the SoCal Hard Eights.

Loyd also helped the Frisco Pandas (now known as the Nashville Chefs) reach the Challenger level playoffs in 2024. His recent strong showing and past experience should give him momentum as the California Black Bears head into a tough two-week stretch. The team will compete in Edward Jones MLP San Clemente and MLP New York.

Why This Trade Matters

The trade adds experience to both teams. Texas gains a skilled backup in Rafa Hewett, while California gets a confident and capable player in Michael Loyd. With key events coming soon, this trade could shape both teams’ performance going forward.
