Match with major playoff meaning

The match featured two teams tied at 19 points in the standings heading into Thursday. Miami Pickleball Club had a record of 7-13, while the Chicago Slice stood at 5-16. Both were fighting for a postseason berth, with only one playoff position remaining.

Chicago led 2-1 in the match and needed just one more win to close it out. But the fourth game changed everything.

Miami forces a DreamBreaker

In the second mixed doubles game, Miami’s Mya Bui and Yuta Funemizu stunned Chicago’s Callie Smith and James Ignatowich 11-5. Their win tied the overall match at 2-2 and forced a DreamBreaker.

“We really just wanted to bring the energy,”. “We wanted to leave it all out on the court. That’s really what we talked about before we went on. Everyone on this team just really wants it, so we wanted to give it our best effort.”(Mya Bui)

That performance opened the door for Jay Devilliers to take control in the final game.

Devilliers dominates to secure the win

In the DreamBreaker, Jay Devilliers outscored Max Freeman 8-2 over three turns. His strong singles play helped Miami clinch the match 3-2 overall with a 21-13 DreamBreaker score.

“That was definitely special,”. “This is big for us and for our momentum, but the job is not done. We have four more this weekend, so you’re gonna see us bringing the energy again.”(Jay Devilliers)

What’s next for both teams

The Miami Pickleball Club now stands at 8-13 with 21 points and control of the final playoff spot. They face the Texas Ranchers and Atlanta Bouncers on Friday.

The Chicago Slice, now at 5-17 with 20 points, will try to bounce back in a match against the Utah Black Diamonds.
