Liz Truluck Prepares for MLP Australia Debut: Liz Truluck, currently ranked 37th in Women’s Doubles, 32nd in Mixed Doubles, and 18th in Women’s Singles on the PPA Tour, is chronicling her journey for The Dink as she prepares for her debut with the Fast Fours in MLP Australia. The Gold Coast, with its stunning landscapes, has been the backdrop for her recent preparations.
“Welcome back to my journey at the MLP Australia Gold Coast! The past two days have been a whirlwind of preparation and exploration on the beautiful Gold Coast. I started each of my mornings off with a refreshing long walk along the beach and surrounded by wildlife to ground myself and get ready for the day.” – (Liz Truluck)
Adapting to New Conditions
On Wednesday, Truluck and her team, the Fast Fours, faced the challenge of practicing under the intense sun. With temperatures reaching 85 degrees, the team worked to adapt to the heat. Coach Ben Costin, who played alongside them and provided valuable feedback, was instrumental in their training. A significant part of their practice was dedicated to acclimating to the Dura Fast 40 ball, a key piece of equipment for the MLPA and PPA events this weekend.
“With the PPA in the United States now using the Vulcan Pro Flight in tournaments, getting extra reps with the new ball was helpful, as there is a slight difference in how the ball affects the speed of the game and ultimately strategy.” – (Liz Truluck)
Familiarizing with the Event Venue
Thursday brought the team to their designated practice slot at the RACV Royal Pines Resort. The event courts, covered by a large white canopy, were illuminated beautifully by the sun, with the backdrop of the resort’s golf course adding to the charm.
Jamie Wei, Truluck’s teammate, arrived in the afternoon, and the team gathered at 5 p.m. to receive their uniforms, participate in team media activities, and practice on the site.
“Unpacking the team gear evoked nostalgic memories of college tennis and reminded me of how much I love and miss participating in team sports. And everyone’s jersey had our last name on it – pretty sick!” – (Liz Truluck)
Building Team Chemistry and Community Spirit
The practice on the match courts offered Truluck and her team a chance to get accustomed to the PickleRoll surface used for the tournament. They focused on mixed and gender doubles, refining game styles, patterns, and team chemistry.
The evening concluded with a players’ party featuring tacos, providing an opportunity to mingle with other MLPA competitors and solidify bonds within the pickleball community.
“One of the standout aspects for me so far has been the strong sense of community in Australian pickleball. While we’re all here to compete and strive for victory, there’s a remarkable atmosphere of support and camaraderie among the players and teams. The warm reception I’ve received, along with the welcoming attitude towards other new players, has truly enhanced this experience. It’s invigorating and makes me even more excited for the rest of the weekend.” – (Liz Truluck)
