Megan Fudge Goes All Out for The MLP Miami Event: The Final Countdown

Megan Fudge Goes All Out for The MLP Miami Event: As the 2024 Major League Pickleball season draws to a close, excitement builds for the final regular season event taking place this weekend at the Miami Fairgrounds. Megan Fudge, the standout player for the Chicago Slice, shared her thoughts on Major League Pickleball’s evolving scene.

A Weekend of Intense MLP Matches

The Miami Fairgrounds will serve as the stage for 30 matches over four days, commencing on Thursday and ending on Sunday. A total of thirteen teams—seven at the Premier Level and six at the Challenger Level—will compete, while nine other teams have already completed their seasons.

Fudge’s Perspective: A Mix of Excitement and Uncertainty

“As we head into MLP (Major League Pickleball) week, there’s excitement but also plenty of lingering questions.” Megan Fudge remarked.

“What exactly is MLP today? When Steve Kuhn first came up with the idea of Major League Pickleball, I thought it was a fantastic concept. I loved the idea of creating a team-based, college tennis-like atmosphere where fans could rally behind teams, with each team made up of two men and two women. The potential for this product to build a massive fanbase was clear from the start, and I was super excited.” – (Megan Fudge)

However, Megan Fudge voiced her concerns about the league’s structure.

“The way it’s been structured and rolled out this year has led to concerns. This is why I initially pulled my name from the draft at the start of the year—there were more questions than answers. How would the new organization function? How would it all be presented? The framework—having a structured calendar and playing for something meaningful—sounded great in theory. But the execution? That’s where many players, including myself, have voiced frustrations.” – (Megan Fudge)

Playoff Aspirations: The Chicago Slice’s Road Ahead

With the regular season winding down, Megan Fudge still finds herself grappling with uncertainty regarding the league’s future.

“This weekend marks the last regular season event, and while I’m competing for the Chicago Slice, there’s still a lot of uncertainty about how the league will evolve. The Slice is currently second in the standings, and we’ve got four crucial matches left against some of the league’s toughest teams. Everyone’s hungry for wins, pushing to secure playoff spots.” – (Megan Fudge)

The Chicago Slice enters this tournament with a strong record of 36 points and an impressive 1.89 points per match average, holding the second place in the standings. They face formidable opponents, including teams from Atlanta Bouncers, Florida Smash, Miami Pickleball Club, and Brooklyn Aces.

Megan Fudge acknowledges the momentum generated from the recent MLP Virginia Beach event.

“Chicago had a really good MLP Virginia Beach, and the players are riding that wave of positive momentum. They do have a tough schedule, with Miami trying to take the #1 overall seed and Brooklyn and Atlanta fighting for playoff positioning. This team isn’t great in Dreambreakers, but they have a super solid squad that can win in any matchup—there is no glaring weakness.” – (Megan Fudge)

The stakes are high for the Chicago Slice.

“If we finish in the top two, we’ll avoid going to Dallas and head straight to Orlando for the semifinals and finals, which would also grant us an automatic bid for promotion next year.” – (Megan Fudge)

Yet, she acknowledges the uncertainty surrounding the future of the league.

“Our team, like others, is structured in such a way that none of the players can be kept by the Chicago Slice, meaning we would need to be redrafted—so there’s uncertainty even around what promotion will look like for next year.” – (Megan Fudge)

Optimism Amid Challenges

Despite the challenges, Megan Fudge remains optimistic about her performance this weekend. Currently ranked sixth among Challenger Level players in the 2024 Major League Pickleball Rankings with 23 games won and a 52.42% points won ratio, she stated,

“Still, I feel great about this weekend. Our team has been growing stronger with every MLP event, and we’ve really gelled off the court as well. The energy is high, and I believe we can perform well against anyone.” – (Megan Fudge)

Megan Fudge’s mixed feelings about the tournament reflect her dedication to the sport.

“So, when people ask me if I’m excited to play this weekend, my answer is yes—but it’s a mixed kind of excitement. I’m eager to compete for the Chicago Slice, for our team, and for our owners. But from the standpoint of the MLP product, it’s been disappointing to see how things have unfolded this year. I had such high hopes for this idea, but the way it’s been executed leaves a lot to be desired.” – (Megan Fudge)

A Love for the Game

Ultimately, Megan Fudge finds solace in her passion for pickleball.

“At the end of the day, though, I get to do what I love—play pickleball. And for now, that’s what matters most. Let’s go SLICE!” – (Megan Fudge)
