PPA Tour Challenger Series and Gold Card System: The Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) has officially launched its Challenger series, aimed at players ranked outside the top 20 on the tour. Announced earlier in August by PPA CEO Connor Pardoe, the series will offer both prize money and ranking points. At the end of the season, the top four finishers in each discipline will compete for a Tour Contract in 2025.
Challenger Series Overview
The PPA Challenger series provides a platform for players who may not yet be ranked in the top 20 but are eager to compete at a high level. This new series offers an opportunity for up-and-coming athletes to gain experience and recognition while earning valuable ranking points and cash prizes.
At the end of the series, the top four players in each discipline will fight for a coveted Tour Contract, marking a significant chance for career advancement.
PPA Tour Finals in San Clemente
The 2024 PPA season officially concluded with the Tour Finals event in San Clemente. Anna Leigh Waters (ALW) dominated the women’s side again, securing a triple crown in a repeat of her performance from the previous year.
On the men’s side, however, there were new champions, with Hunter Johnson claiming the Men’s Singles final in an upset, and Federico Staksrud and Hayden Patriquin winning their third Men’s Doubles title together.
New Gold Card System for Challenger Series Players
As part of the PPA’s efforts to support players, the organization introduced a new “Gold Card” system. This system will reward players with PPA and MLP contracts in 2025.
Players will begin the season with a Gold Card, which offers various benefits. The card will be renewed for the 2026 season based on the player’s performance and successful completion of set requirements.
The Future of Professional Pickleball
The launch of the Challenger series and the introduction of the Gold Card system could have a big impact on the future of the sport. These changes are designed to create more opportunities for emerging talent while giving top players the recognition they deserve.
As the PPA expands its offerings, the landscape of professional pickleball is likely to continue evolving, opening up more pathways for players and raising the sport’s profile overall.
